3-Day Fever, There Was a Worm in This Grandmother's Brain
Light House Denver – There was a worm in this grandmother’s brain, a 60-year-old woman in China narrowly survived after a worm was discovered in her brain. The woman, whose name was not disclosed, initially went to the hospital complaining of a fever for three days and severe confusion. Her condition was critical to the point where she could neither speak nor understand those around her.
Doctors initially suspected that the woman was suffering from meningitis, a brain inflammation caused by infection, as indicated by symptoms such as fever, confusion, and a stiff neck. With this diagnosis in mind, the woman was quickly treated with antibiotics. However, after two weeks of treatment, her condition worsened instead of improving.

Eventually, the woman underwent further testing with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The results showed a significant increase in brain lesions and very high levels of eosinophils (a type of white blood cell). This led doctors to suspect a rare parasitic infection, prompting them to investigate further.
A case study published in the Journal of Neurology revealed that, prior to the onset of her symptoms, the woman had eaten lobster late at night. Doctors suspected that the parasitic worm from the undercooked seafood caused her infection. Further tests confirmed that the woman had contracted Angiostrongylus cantonensis, a parasitic worm commonly found in undercooked seafood.
The Angiostrongylus cantonensis worm causes a condition called eosinophilic meningitis, a rare form of brain inflammation caused by a parasitic infection. Doctors believe the worm migrated to her brain after entering her body through the undercooked seafood.
After this diagnosis, the woman was promptly treated with the anti-parasitic medication albendazole. Four months later, the brain lesions caused by a worm in this grandmother’s brain had significantly reduced. Her health had almost fully recovered by then. This case serves as an important warning about the potential dangers of undercooked seafood. It highlights how such food can lead to serious infections in the human body.
